How a photographer judges a venue

Three things decide how a venue photographs, and none of them appear in the sales deck.

• Where the sun dies. A west facing terrace gives you a golden ceremony, an east facing one gives you shade at five. The Riviera runs east to west, so this single fact sorts the whole coast.
• The walk. The frames everyone remembers are made in transitions, the corridor to the aisle, the steps to the terrace, the garden path to dinner. Venues with beautiful walks photograph themselves.
• Privacy at the edges. The coast is public and curious. The great venues own their sightlines, which is why they cost what they cost and why the photographs look the way they look.

The gardens: Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

The pink palazzo on the spine of Cap Ferrat holds nine gardens and a temple of love above the sea, and it remains the most complete photographic venue on the coast, ceremony, cocktails and dinner each get their own world without a single transfer.

The legend: Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc

Antibes' white palace is the Riviera's most photographed hotel and still underrated as a wedding venue, because the pictures everyone knows are of the diving board and the pictures that matter are made in the pine park between the house and the sea.

It is a venue of distances, long allees, white stone, horizon, and it rewards a team that has walked them before the day. The complete notes live in the Eden-Roc field guide.

The village in the sky: Chateau de la Chevre d'Or

Eze hangs four hundred metres above the sea and the Chevre d'Or hangs off Eze, terraces stacked into the cliff with the whole Mediterranean as a backdrop. No venue on the coast gives a ceremony more altitude drama for less logistical pain.

The trade is space, it is a venue for forty guests, not two hundred, and the medieval lanes above it belong to everyone. We wrote the honest version in the Chevre d'Or guide.

The quiet aristocrat: Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat

A Four Seasons in a pine forest at the tip of the peninsula, with the lawn running straight at the sea and the best blue hour on the entire coast. Where Eden-Roc performs, Cap-Ferrat withholds, and the photographs carry that reserve.

Choosing between them

Choose Ephrussi for completeness, Eden-Roc for legend, the Chevre d'Or for drama at small scale and Cap-Ferrat for reserve at full scale. Then let the date decide, May and October soften the whole coast, July and August harden it with heat, crowds and haze.
