What does a Santorini wedding photographer cost?

The bands, plainly

• Entry, 1 200 to 2 000 euros. Newer photographers building a portfolio, usually island based, one shooter, a straightforward gallery.
• Established, 2 000 to 6 000 euros. Experienced professionals with real caldera weddings behind them, reliable coverage and considered editing.
• Luxury, 7 000 to 18 000 euros. Editorial studios that plan with your planner, scout the terrace in advance, bring a team and deliver albums built to last.
• Photography and film together, 9 000 to 22 000 euros. One studio covering both crafts as a single story, which is how most caldera weddings now commission it.

Our own commissions begin at 6 500 euros for The Reportage and 12 000 for The Edition. We are a travelling atelier rather than an island studio, and that number includes flights, stays and the scouting day rather than adding them afterwards. If a quote sits far below the band its promises belong to, that gap is information.

What makes the island expensive

• Scarcity, not distance. Santorini's supply of good ceremony space is physically fixed. The caldera is a vertical wall, the terraces cut into it hold twenty five to sixty people, and everybody wants the same two hours on the same day of the week in the same four months. Nothing can be built to relieve that, which is why island pricing behaves unlike anywhere else in Greece.
• The sunset slot. Venues price it separately and planners fight for it. A photographer who depends on it inherits both that cost and that risk. We plan around three windows instead, which is cheaper for you and calmer on the day.
• Stairs. Oia has no caldera road. Gowns, flowers, guests and every case of equipment travel on foot down stepped lanes. A light kit and advance scouting are not preferences here, they are the job.
• The light itself. Whitewash and a bright sea produce a contrast range that punishes careless exposure and blows a wedding dress out in an instant. Getting skin right against that is a skill with a price attached.
• The meltemi. From mid July to early September a hard northerly runs down the Cyclades. Studios that work here properly carry a wind plan, which means backup locations already scouted and a second set of hands.

How much of the budget photography should take

Wedding industry data across Europe and the United States puts photography and film at ten to fifteen percent of the total, with twelve percent a common midpoint. On a 45 000 euro Santorini wedding that suggests roughly 4 500 to 6 500 euros. On a 120 000 euro caldera wedding with a film, closer to 15 000.

The percentage matters more than it looks, because photography and the film are the only line items still working ten years later. The terrace, the flowers and the sunset slot are gone by Sunday. The archive is what the money actually bought.

Reading a Santorini quote

• Is travel inside the number? On an island reached by ferry or one small airport, a headline price with expenses invoiced afterwards is not a lower price. Ask for one figure, confirmed before you sign.
• What is the wind plan? If the answer is improvised, expect improvisation on the day.
• Who is coming? The person whose portfolio you loved should be named in the contract, with a written backup.
• Do they use the uncontested hours? A photographer who only shoots the sunset slot is a photographer with one idea. Ask what they would do at dawn.

When to book

Twelve to eighteen months out for a summer date, and the best studios close small calendars first. September and June go earliest.
