The best Santorini wedding venues

The capacity ceiling nobody mentions first

The caldera is a near vertical wall of volcanic rock, and the terraces cut into it are small. This is the most important planning fact on the island and it is usually the last one couples are told.

Working numbers for the cliff venues run from around twenty five to around sixty seated. Above roughly eighty guests the caldera stops being practical at all, and the honest options become an inland winery or the southeast coast, both of which are better than a compromised cliff wedding and neither of which anyone regrets.

So the sequence is: count the guests, choose the zone, then choose the venue. Doing it in the other order is how couples end up paying a caldera premium for a terrace that cannot seat their family.

Oia, for the frame

• Canaves Oia. At the quieter northern end. The Veranda rooftop seats around forty with roughly a hundred and eighty degrees of caldera, and the Sunset Terrace around twenty five. Canaves Epitome, away from the cliff, takes a ceremony of about twenty five and a restaurant seating of roughly twenty six to sixty. It has its own field guide page.
• Andronis Luxury Suites and Andronis Concept. Terraces at the sharp end of Oia, dramatic and correspondingly busy, with the sunset crowd on the path immediately above.
• Katikies. The classic whitewashed cascade, small ceremony spaces, and one of the better getting ready environments on the island.
• The old castle ruin. Public, free, and completely impossible at sunset. At dawn it is the best twenty minutes in Oia and it belongs to whoever gets up for it.

Imerovigli and Fira, for the balance

• Imerovigli. Higher on the rim than Oia, calmer, with Skaros rock in the middle distance. The best ratio of view to crowd anywhere on the caldera, and our usual recommendation for couples who want the frame without the circus.
• Grace Hotel Santorini, Imerovigli. An infinity pool that photographs as well as anything on the island and a terrace that handles a small ceremony cleanly.
• Fira and Firostefani. Closest to the port and the cable car, busiest by day, and home to several of the larger cliff venues, which makes this the zone to look at when your list is at the upper end of what the caldera can take.
• Cosmopolitan and the Fira terraces. Straightforward, well run, and honest about what they hold.

Above eighty guests, leave the cliff

• Santo Wines. The obvious inland answer, with the caldera still in frame, a large terraced capacity and none of the vertical logistics. It is busy and it is commercial, and it works.
• Venetsanos Winery. Cut into the slope above the old port, more architectural than Santo, with a genuinely dramatic approach.
• Perivolos and Vlychada, the southeast coast. Black sand, low cliffs, no crowds, and the only part of the island where a beach reception is actually comfortable rather than notionally romantic.
• Pyrgos and the interior villages. Cycladic architecture, no caldera premium, and a completely different and quieter register.
• Private villas on the south coast. For couples who want a three day programme rather than a single evening, and who have accepted that the caldera will be a portrait location rather than the venue.

How we photograph any of them

Around three windows, not one. First light, an hour after dawn, when Oia is genuinely empty and the volcanic rock is pink. The shaded afternoon, when the cliff faces turn and the whitewash stops screaming. And blue hour, roughly twenty minutes after the sunset crowd walks away, when the rock still holds red and the village comes up in tiers of light. Two of those three are uncontested and neither costs anything.

Everything moves on foot down stepped lanes, so we work with a deliberately light kit, and between mid July and early September we hold a wind contingency because the meltemi hits rooftops first.
