Weddings at Aman Sveti Stefan

What actually happened, and when

Sveti Stefan closed in 2021. The dispute was not commercial in the ordinary sense: under Montenegro's Law on Sea Goods every stretch of coast is public, and local residents pressed for restored access to the beaches in front of the hotel. The resort and the state spent nearly five years in disagreement, and through that period the islet stood empty and photographed only from the coast road above it.

A settlement between the Montenegrin government and the leaseholder resolved it. The terms were specific and they matter to anyone planning a wedding here. Sveti Stefan Beach and King's Beach return to public access. Queen's Beach remains reserved for hotel guests. The state takes a ten percent share of resort profits, and a permanent construction ban now protects Milocer Park.

Reopening came in two stages during 2026. Villa Milocer on the mainland, together with the Aman Spa and the beaches, opened on 22 May. The islet itself followed on 1 July. That means the 2026 season is the first in six years in which a wedding on Sveti Stefan is possible at all, and it also means almost every guide, supplier list and photographer's page you will find about the property was written before the closure or during it. The two halves of the property

• The islet is a stone village: lanes barely wide enough for two people, terracotta roofs, a church, and a shoreline that drops straight into the Adriatic on every side. It is the frame everyone knows from the aerial view, and photographing a wedding inside it is closer to working in a medieval hill town than in a resort.
• Villa Milocer, on the mainland a few hundred metres away, was the summer residence of the Yugoslav queen and reads completely differently: parkland, mature cedars, an arcaded terrace, and the beaches directly below. It reopened first, in May.
• The causeway between them is the single most cinematic approach we know of on this coast. It is narrow, it is at sea level, and a procession crossing it is photographed with open water on both sides.
• Queen's Beach, the crescent below the villa, stays guest only under the settlement, which makes it the one genuinely private stretch of shore on the property.
• Milocer Park, now permanently protected from construction, gives shaded portraits in the middle of the day, which on this coast in August is not a luxury.

Photographing it, and planning around it

The islet faces open sea rather than sitting inside the Bay of Kotor, so it keeps its light to the end of the day, unlike Kotor and Perast where the mountain wall shades you early. Late afternoon along the causeway and the western shore is the hour, and the islet lit at blue hour, photographed from the mainland shore or from the water, is the frame that will end up as the album cover.

The practical constraints follow from the geography. The lanes are narrow and stepped, so kit travels light and gowns travel carefully. The causeway is a public sightline. And because the beaches either side are legally public, a ceremony on the shore is never fully sealed, which is exactly the reality the settlement codified. None of that is a problem when it is planned for. All of it is a problem when a supplier promises otherwise.

We take Sveti Stefan commissions with a scouting day built in, because a property this newly reopened has no reliable institutional memory in the wedding trade yet, and because the difference between a good and a great day here is knowing which lane holds the light at seven and which one is already in shadow at five.
