A Renaissance hotel that predates the camera

Villa d'Este has been receiving guests since long before anyone thought to photograph a wedding, and it shows in the confidence of the place. The gardens climb from the water to the great mosaic of the nymphaeum, a wall of sculpted pebbles and grottoes that is unlike anything else on the lake. The famous pool sits out on the water itself, the corridors are hung with portraits, and the whole villa moves with the ease of a house that has hosted every kind of celebration for centuries.

For a photographer that history is a gift of ready made frames. The mosaic, the colonnades, the floating pool and the long formal avenues are each composed already, and the staff have seen every trick of light the villa offers. The work is to move a wedding through those settings at the right hours and to find the quiet corners of a park large enough to lose a crowd in.

A whole weekend in one address

Villa d'Este is a full grand hotel, so a wedding here can live entirely on the estate, from the morning preparations to the last dance, without a single transfer. That completeness is its luxury, and it lets a photographer plan the light room by room and garden by garden across a long, unhurried day. We scout the villa the day before and agree the running order with the hotel's own weddings team, who know their light as well as anyone on the lake.

The park is the other advantage. Twenty five acres give a large wedding room to breathe and a photographer somewhere quiet to take two people for the frames that matter, away from the celebration. We keep the mosaic and the pool for the golden hour, use the corridors and avenues for the light in between, and cross to the water for the blue hour the villa has been photographed in for a hundred years.
