How to elope in Venice

Venice may be the best city in Europe for two people to marry alone. The stage is absurd, the logistics are a tide table, and at dawn the whole theatre belongs to whoever is awake in it. This is the complete guide, paperwork, timing, gondolas and all, from a studio that photographs the lagoon every season.

Why Venice suits an elopement

Big weddings fight Venice, the crowds, the bridges, the logistics of moving eighty people by boat. Two people slip through it like residents. You can marry in a frescoed sala in the morning, cross the Grand Canal by traghetto at noon, and have the day's whole story photographed without a single guest list spreadsheet.

The city rewards exactly what an elopement is, patience, intimacy and early mornings. Every famous frame of Venice was made before eight. Elopements can be there for it. Weddings rarely can.

The practical steps

How the day should run

Dawn first, always. Piazza San Marco while the café chairs are still stacked, the Rialto with no one on it, a gondola through side canals as the light arrives. This is the hour that justifies the whole trip, and it is over by nine.

Then the ceremony, mid morning, indoors or on a terrace. Lunch long and Venetian. In the evening, a second short session, lamplight on wet stone, the palazzo windows glowing, the city switching to its night self. Two sessions, one day, a complete archive.

Our field notes on the city, its palazzi and its tide tables live on the Venice page, what our editions include is on the editions page, and the commission sheet answers within one working day.

Quick answers

Asked often

Is it legal for foreigners to marry in Venice?

Yes, civil ceremonies for foreign couples are held at Palazzo Cavalli with paperwork arranged through the comune and your consulate, booked well ahead. Many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic Venetian ceremony instead, which is simpler and opens far more locations.

What does a Venice elopement cost to photograph?

It sits at the entry edition of most serious studios, ours begins there too, because it needs one photographer and one extraordinary morning. The boat is the only real extra worth budgeting, and it is not optional in Venice anyway.

When is Venice empty enough for portraits?

Before eight in the morning, all year, and again after dinner. Between those hours the city belongs to day visitors and we work indoors or on the water. Winter adds fog and near total emptiness, the connoisseur's choice.

Should we do the gondola or is it a cliché?

Do the gondola. From inside it is transport, from our boat alongside it is one of the last genuinely romantic processionals left in Europe. Ask the gondolier for the small canals and the long way.

Two people, one lagoon. We will be awake.
